Pallars region retains Francoist symbols in streets and buildings
Francoist symbols continue to persist in the streets and buildings of the Pallars region. While more than 50% of registered elements have been removed across Catalonia since the end of the dictatorship, an Agència Catalana de Notícies (ACN) report indicates that 2,069 vestiges still remain in the country.
In the Pallars comarcas, this presence includes graffiti dating back to around 1939, engravings on church bells, and funerary plaques. In Tremp, faded but legible slogans such as ‘España Una! Grande! Libre!’ and ‘Arriba España’ can still be found. Additionally, an old monument to the ‘fallen’ has been modified over the years to serve as a plural tribute to those executed during the Civil War, removing the original regime proclamations.
In Montardit de Baix, the concentration of vestiges is particularly notable. The facade of the former village school still displays Falange symbols and figures of Francisco Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera. Other markings, including a blue profile of the former dictator, remain visible on local walls.
