Pallas's gull spotted near Krynica Morska on the Polish Baltic coast

A rare Pallas's gull, an Asian species, has been spotted near Krynica Morska on the Polish Baltic coast. The sighting, noted by members of the Drapolicz Association and reported by Birding Poland, is considered an ornithological sensation due to the bird's rarity in the region.

The Pallas's gull is characterized by its massive build, a predatory beak profile, and a wingspan that can reach up to 170 centimeters. Unlike common gulls, it produces deep, hoarse sounds similar to a crow's caw. The species typically inhabits the steppe and semi-desert lakes of Central Asia, including parts of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and China.

This species is known for its aggressive behavior, often acting like a pirate by using its size and strength to steal food from other birds. While its diet primarily consists of small animals, it also consumes carrion and scraps. This is not the first time the species has been seen in Poland this year, with previous sightings recorded near Zamość and Warsaw.
