Palm Desert City Council to consider new AI usage policy
The Palm Desert City Council is set to consider a citywide artificial intelligence policy governing how AI tools may be utilized in municipal operations. The proposed framework is designed to assist city employees, including interns, volunteers, and elected officials, through the use of approved AI tools.
A central component of the proposal is a risk-based classification system. AI usage will be categorized as low, moderate, or high-risk based on its capabilities and potential impact. High-risk activities—such as accessing sensitive information, communicating independently without human oversight, or making autonomous actions that create legal or financial commitments—will require explicit approval from a Department Director or the City Manager.
The policy also includes strict prohibitions against using AI to falsify city records, fabricate communications, or circumvent security controls. An artificial intelligence officer, a position established in March 2026, will be responsible for administering the policy and managing the risk classification program. If passed, the policy will take effect immediately.
