Palm oil industry faces scrutiny over sustainability and deforestation impact

The palm oil industry is facing increasing pressure to adopt sustainable and traceable production methods to meet global market expectations. In San Pedro Sula, the 2nd Honduran Palm Growers Congress brought together over 400 industry leaders, including 113 international representatives, to discuss regional transformation, leadership renewal, and navigating evolving international regulatory landscapes.

However, the effectiveness of corporate sustainability efforts remains a subject of debate. A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) examined Indonesian palm oil concessions to evaluate the impact of zero-deforestation commitments (ZDCs). While the research found that companies largely complied with their ZDC pledges, it concluded there was no evidence that these specific commitments led to additional reductions in deforestation beyond broader market and policy trends already affecting the sector.
