Palm Springs City Council to decide on District 2 seat appointment

The Palm Springs City Council is scheduled to hold a special meeting to decide the fate of the District 2 seat. The council must determine whether to appoint the sole candidate, Jeffrey Bernstein, or proceed with a general election in November.

If the council chooses to appoint Bernstein, the November election for the District 2 seat will be canceled. Bernstein, who has served on the council since November 2022 and previously served as mayor, would officially begin a four-year term following the November 3 election.

Should the council decide to hold the election, write-in candidates may still enter the race between September 7 and October 20. City officials estimate that proceeding with the election would cost approximately $22,000. This situation mirrors a similar occurrence in 2020 regarding the District 5 seat.
