Palm vein biometrics emerges as secure authentication alternative

Palm vein biometrics is gaining traction as a security layer to combat identity fraud and deepfakes. This technology uses optical and infrared sensors to identify unique vascular patterns beneath the skin, making it more difficult to replicate than facial recognition.

Positivo Soluções em Pagamentos, a unit of Positivo Tecnologia, is demonstrating this technology at the Airport Infra Summit in São Paulo. Developed in collaboration with Tencent Cloud, the solution integrates PalmAI technology with specialized hardware. The system boasts a 99.99% accuracy rate and authentication speeds of approximately 500 milliseconds, offering a contactless and potentially lower-cost alternative for high-traffic environments like airports.

Market projections indicate significant growth for the global vascular palm biometrics sector, with estimates suggesting it could reach US$ 2.69 billion by 2030. While experts note that more difficult-to-forge biometrics reduce certain risks, they warn that security still depends on the overall authentication architecture to prevent new types of attacks.
