Palma Airport expansion faces organized protest from environmental groups

More than a dozen civil entities, led by the Platform Against the Expansion of Mallorca Airport, have organized a protest in Palma scheduled for September 20. The mobilization targets Aena and the Spanish Ministry of Transport regarding the DORA III plan, which proposes significant investments to increase the operational capacity of airports in the Balearic Islands.

Under the proposed plan, Palma Airport would see an investment of 622 million euros, aiming to increase its annual capacity from 33.8 million to 35.7 million passengers by 2031. Similar expansions are planned for Ibiza and Menorca. Protesters argue these measures will exacerbate tourism massification and environmental issues. Supporting organizations include Greenpeace, GOB, and various local neighborhood associations, who are also advocating for the end of promoting new air routes to manage tourism saturation.
