Palma approves redevelopment of abandoned GESA building
After fifteen years of neglect, the Palma municipal council has approved a redevelopment plan for the historic GESA building designed by Josep Ferragut. The proposal by architects Cruz & Ortiz adds a large pergola, a new three‑storey structure housing an Energy Interpretation Centre and a Cultural Centre of Art and Creation, and an underground car park with 961 spaces – the city’s biggest.
The design also introduces white steel struts on the original glass façade and a transparent roof structure to create a panoramic event space, sparking debate over alterations to the architect’s original isolated character.
The project aims to revitalize the waterfront area, although critics argue it compromises public green space and the building’s historic integrity.
