Palma protest against mass tourism sees 25 injured by police
On 26 July, a demonstration opposing the mass‑tourism model was held in Palma, Mallorca. Police forces used batons during the dispersal, striking protesters indiscriminately.
Twenty‑five participants reported injuries; two suffered head wounds that required hospitalisation, while many others sustained bruises and contusions. Several injured claim they were denied medical assistance by the police.
Local activist groups Menys Turisme, Més Vida and Alerta Solidària are analysing video footage, collecting medical reports and intend to file individual and joint complaints against the officers involved. The organisations have also demanded the resignation of Alfonso Rodríguez, the Spanish government delegate to the Balearic Islands, and have called for explanations from the police command. Balearic president Marga Prohens has refrained from commenting and referred the matter to the delegate. A further rally is scheduled for Sóller as the protest movement continues.
