Palma restaurants protest terrace removals for citizens' al fresco supper

Restaurant owners in Palma are expressing frustration after the Palma City Council ordered the removal of outdoor terraces on Passeig Born to accommodate an al fresco supper organized by the citizens' group Brunzit.

Brunzit has been organizing weekly 'Sopars a la Llesca' (al fresco suppers) throughout July and August to reclaim public spaces for local residents, who often feel excluded from areas primarily catering to tourists. While the City Council denied official permission for the group to use the square, the event is being held as a gathering authorized by the Spanish Government delegation.

Juanmi Ferrer, president of the CAEB Restaurants Association and owner of Born 8, criticized the decision to mandate the removal of tables and chairs just thirty minutes before the event, arguing that there is sufficient space for both restaurant patrons and the gathering to coexist. Conversely, some local managers, such as Juanjo Sánchez of La Siesta, expressed a more relaxed attitude toward sharing the space with residents.
