Palmas bus drivers begin strike over wages and working conditions
Bus drivers in Palmas, Brazil, began a strike on Tuesday morning, causing significant overcrowding at transit stations. The walkout was approved during an assembly on October 23, with workers demanding the implementation of the 2026 minimum wage as established in collective bargaining agreements.
In addition to wage disputes, the union, Simtromet, is protesting against the concessionaire Sancetur regarding improper salary and food voucher deductions. Workers are also calling for improved working conditions, specifically requesting adequate restroom facilities and access to drinking water at stations and line terminals.
A regional labor court (TRT-10) issued an injunction requiring a minimum service level of 80% of the fleet during peak hours (5:30 to 8:30 and 17:00 to 20:00) and 70% during other times. While the union claims to be complying with the judicial order, the city government alleges that the minimum percentages are not being met and intends to take further legal action. Negotiations between the parties are expected to continue.
