Palmas health officials promote cancer prevention screenings

The Municipal Health Secretariat of Palmas (Semus) is emphasizing the importance of preventive screenings for breast and cervical cancer during the Pink October campaign. While services are available year-round at Family Health Units (USFs), the campaign aims to increase awareness regarding early detection.

Guidelines recommend mammograms every two years for women aged 50 to 74. For cervical cancer prevention, the Pap smear is indicated for women aged 25 to 64 who have begun sexual activity; after two consecutive normal results at one-year intervals, testing may occur every three years. Health officials advise that any suspicious changes, such as lumps in the breasts or armpits, skin changes, or unusual discharge, should be evaluated by a professional regardless of age.
