Palmas police investigate R$ 139 million healthcare contract

The Civil Police are investigating a contract worth approximately R$ 139 million between the Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Itatiba and the City Hall of Palmas, Tocantins. The agreement involves the outsourcing of management for Urgent Care Units (UPAs) in the capital.

Authorities suspect irregularities, including potential bid rigging through a waiver of the bidding process and the fraudulent creation of retroactive documents to formalize the partnership. The investigation includes charges of embezzlement, corruption, and money laundering. Law enforcement actions have involved search and seizure warrants and the temporary arrest of individuals, including former health officials in Palmas. While the judiciary previously suspended the contract, subsequent decisions allowed services to continue to prevent the interruption of public healthcare services.
