Flamengo under fire for costly transfers and youth player sales

Former Flamengo player Júnior and media commentators have criticised director José Boto for what they describe as "arrogant" and unproductive spending on high‑profile signings such as Emerson Royal, Lucas Paquetá, Vitão and Jorge Carrascal. The club’s first‑quarter 2026 accounts show roughly R$ 900 million spent on reinforcements, prompting calls for more creative and cost‑effective recruitment.

At the same time, Flamengo is moving young talent abroad. Volante Kaio Nóbrega is set to join Portuguese side Estoril on a contract through 2029, with the club retaining 30 % of his economic rights. Forward Alan Santos has attracted interest from three European clubs but has yet to receive a formal offer. The club is also negotiating the signing of 17‑year‑old striker Ayrian from Cuiabá.

Fans have reacted strongly to the proposed sale of academy graduate Lorran, who recently impressed after the 2026 World Cup. Supporters argue the club is prioritising cash over developing home‑grown players, adding pressure on Boto’s management as Flamengo prepares for upcoming league matches.
