Palmeiras assistant João Martins draws criticism over comments on Brazilian football

João Martins, assistant coach for Palmeiras, has drawn scrutiny following comments regarding the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva (STJD) after head coach Abel Ferreira's suspension was increased from two to three matches.

During a press conference, Martins compared the state of Brazilian football to the country's broader social situation, stating that football reflects the society of a nation, citing examples like Norway and Portugal. He suggested that current news in Brazil reflects the issues present within the sport.

Former player Elias criticized Martins' remarks and the Palmeiras coaching staff's public stance. Elias noted that during his time working with Ferreira at Sporting in Portugal, the technical commission did not engage in such public criticism. He further suggested that if the coaching staff is dissatisfied with the Brazilian football environment, they should seek opportunities in other countries.
