Palmeiras beats Fortaleza 3-0, clinches Copa do Brasil advantage

Palmeiras defeated Fortaleza 3‑0 in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil round of 16 on 2 August 2024 at Nubank Parque in São Paulo. The goals were scored by Maurício, Jhon Arias and Flaco López. The win gives Palmeiras a three‑goal cushion; the team can lose the second leg by up to two goals and still progress. Fortaleza sold its home‑field rights, so the return match will be held at Arena Pantanal in Cuiabá.

In preparation for the second leg, Palmeiras resumed training at its Academy. Defender Gustavo Gómez is making progress on a right‑thigh injury, while forward Paulinho was diagnosed with an adductor injury and right‑thigh pain, and right‑back Khellven suffered a contusion in the anterior thigh. Both Paulinho and Khellven are expected to miss the upcoming match. The club also confirmed its intent to retain key players, notably offering a new contract to Argentine striker Flaco López amid interest from abroad.
