Palmeiras striker Paulinho declares support for Lula
Paulinho, a striker for the Brazilian football club Palmeiras, has publicly declared his support for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In a social media post, the athlete, born Paulo Henrique Sampaio Filho, linked his political choice to his family's history and the impact of social welfare programs.
He specifically cited initiatives such as Bolsa Família, ProUni, the quota system, and Minha Casa, Minha Vida as programs that provided opportunities to his family and others from low-income backgrounds. Paulinho stated that he does not forget his origins and emphasized that his career in football has not distanced him from the reality of his roots.
The player clarified that his support is not an endorsement of perfection regarding Lula's governments, but rather a recognition of the opportunities provided by public policies. He noted, “It is not about thinking everything was perfect. It is about recognizing our history, valuing those who come from below and defending a Brazil that gives opportunity to those who are still starting.”
