Palmi implements free public transport to combat fuel shortages

The municipal administration of Palmi has announced that local public transport services will be free for seven consecutive days, from Sunday, October 18, to Saturday, October 24. This extraordinary measure, implemented in collaboration with the PPM, aims to mitigate the impact of fuel supply disruptions and rising fuel costs on citizen mobility.

Mayor Giovanni Calabria stated that the initiative is intended to ensure residents and non-residents can continue to access workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities, and public offices despite the current fuel shortages.

In response to the announcement, the trade union FIT CISL ATAM expressed support for the decision to assist citizens but raised concerns regarding the financial implications. The union questioned how the lost revenue would be covered to avoid worsening the economic difficulties currently faced by the transport company, ATAM. They called for clear guarantees regarding economic compensation to maintain the company's financial stability and to protect workers' interests.
