Palmi receives UNESCO ‘Tsunami Ready’ recognition

The Italian municipality of Palmi, located in the province of Reggio Calabria, has been awarded the ‘Tsunami Ready’ recognition by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO). Palmi is the second Italian municipality to receive this accreditation, following Minturno.

The program is a voluntary initiative designed to enhance community preparedness for tsunami risks through collaboration between local administrations, emergency management organizations, and citizens. Accreditation is based on twelve indicators, including risk awareness, alert procedures, and response capabilities.

As part of the CoastWAVE 2.0 project, funded by the European Commission, specific evacuation maps have been developed to identify flood-prone areas and safe routes toward assembly points. These maps are available via the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) Tsunami Alert Center. The recognition ceremony included representatives from the INGV, the Department of Civil Protection, and the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA).
