Palmira Puig and Marcel Giró exhibition opens in São Paulo
The Institut Cervantes in São Paulo has inaugurated an exhibition titled ‘Palmira Puig / Marcel Giró. Humanismo na fotografia modernista brasileira’, showcasing the photographic legacy of Catalan photographers Palmira Puig and Marcel Giró.
Following their exile during the Spanish Civil War, the couple settled in São Paulo in 1946, where they became influential figures in the modernization of Brazilian photography through the Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante. The exhibition highlights Puig’s humanist perspective and her focus on daily life, reclaiming her professional identity which had long been overshadowed by her husband’s career.
The project is a collaboration with the Museu Morera in Lleida, which has played a central role in researching and recovering Puig’s trajectory. This exhibition is part of the ‘Confluências Fotográficas’ program and is linked to Spain’s presence at the São Paulo International Book Biennial.
