Palmones unveils new Virgin of Carmen monolith by the sea

Mayor Miguel Alconchel of Los Barrios inaugurated a permanent monolith dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen on the Palmones waterfront, facing the river’s mouth. The monument, placed on the promenade, is intended as a lasting symbol of devotion to the patron saint of mariners and reflects longstanding local calls for a permanent maritime shrine.

The Virgin of Carmen is historically venerated across Spain as the patroness of sailors, the navy, the merchant marine and fishing communities. Her cult dates back to the 18th century and was formally recognized in 1901, with festivities and processions held in coastal towns such as those on Tenerife.
