A 1947 one-story rancher in the historic Old Palo Alto neighborhood sold for $21.7 million on July 20. The property is situated on a 31,744-square-foot lot, which is considered unusually large for the area.
The residence holds historical significance as the former home of Nicholas Bayard Clinch, a Stanford University graduate and prominent expedition leader. Clinch led the 1958 American expedition to the first ascent of Hidden Peak in Pakistan and the 1966-67 first ascent of Mount Vinson in Antarctica. In 2006, Clinch Peak in Antarctica was named in his honor.
Conceptual plans for a custom home have already been drawn up for the property.
