Palo Alto resident discusses strategic residential tree management
A homeowner in Palo Alto shares insights on the complexities of residential tree management and the importance of professional arboriculture. After experiencing issues with a large silver maple that darkened the home and clogged gutters, the homeowner consulted an arborist, Kevin Raftery.
Following professional advice, several trees were removed because they were poorly positioned, lacked sufficient sunlight, or were structurally unstable due to previous pollarding. Conversely, other trees, such as a Chinese Elm, were allowed to grow to full size to reduce long-term maintenance costs. While the homeowner found that fewer, healthier trees improved the yard, the city of Palo Alto remains focused on increasing tree canopy to provide shade, habitat, and increased property values.
