Palworld lead discusses shifting Steam Early Access culture

John Buckley, the communications and publishing lead for Palworld, has commented on the changing landscape of Steam's Early Access program. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Buckley noted that the traditional understanding of Early Access—where players expect unfinished products and actively participate in development through feedback—is being eroded.

Buckley attributes this shift to the migration of hyper-casual mobile culture and live-service gaming culture onto the Steam platform. He stated that Early Access has essentially lost its meaning because players now purchase these titles as if they were finished products. This change creates challenges for developers, as players may engage deeply for a short period and then depart if content updates do not arrive immediately, rather than understanding the long-term development cycle.
