Pamekasan child sexual abuse cases prompt calls for stronger protection

Following a series of alleged sexual violence cases against young children in Pamekasan, Madura, Indonesian legislator Hj. Ansari has called for strengthened child protection measures. The lawmaker, a member of Commission VIII of the DPR RI, expressed deep concern regarding the recent frequency of these crimes, noting that victims have included children as young as four years old.

Ansari emphasized that prevention requires a systemic approach involving families, the community, and local government. She urged parents to foster open communication so children feel safe reporting uncomfortable experiences and to remain vigilant even when children are in familiar environments, as suspects in these cases are often close to the victims.

Beyond parental responsibility, Ansari stressed that local governments must ensure that reporting services, counseling, and protection for women and children are easily accessible and effective.
