Pamekasan Daul music designated as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage

The Indonesian Ministry of Culture has officially designated Daul music from Pamekasan Regency, East Java, as part of Indonesia's Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTbI). The designation, effective as of September 4, 2026, recognizes the traditional Madurese art form.

Local officials noted that the recognition follows a lengthy process supported by the Cultural Preservation Center Region XI East Java. Key factors in the decision included studies showing the music has existed in Pamekasan for over 50 years, the uniqueness of its instruments, and the continuous efforts of local artists and government to maintain the tradition.

Historically, Daul music originated in the 1970s as a way to wake residents for sahur during the Ramadan fasting month. While the musical arrangements have evolved since the 1980s, the term ‘daul’ was officially formalized in late 1999. To ensure its survival, the Pamekasan Regency government plans to integrate the music into educational environments, including the formation of student activity units in universities.
