Healthcare workers in Argentina and Chile launch strikes over funding and pay

Healthcare workers in Argentina and Chile are launching coordinated strikes to protest funding shortages and remuneration changes.

In Argentina, the Association of Professionals of the PAMI Program and Affiliates (APPAMIA) has initiated a 72-hour national strike from September 30 to October 2. Doctors and dentists are protesting Resolution 1107/2026, which implemented a monthly capitation of 2,100 pesos per affiliate and removed separate payments for in-person consultations. Professionals report that these changes have significantly reduced their monthly income.

Additionally, psychologists in the Buenos Aires province have announced a 24-hour strike for October 2, citing unpaid fees for June, July, and August. The Association of State Workers (ATE) has also called for a 24-hour strike in Buenos Aires on October 7 to demand the permanent hiring of contracted staff and interns.

In Chile, the National Confederation of Municipalized Health Officials (CONFUSAM) and the Confederation of Health Workers of Chile (CONFETSACH) are mobilizing against a budget crisis. Workers are protesting the frozen per capita funding for primary care, which they claim has resulted in a debt of approximately 37 billion pesos owed by the government to municipalities. While some services like emergency care and essential vaccinations remain operational, many scheduled appointments have been suspended.
