Pamiers faces tension over city center pedestrianization

The city of Pamiers is facing local tension regarding its urban redevelopment project, which includes the pedestrianization of Place de la République and a redesigned traffic plan. While the municipality aims to improve quality of life, boost local commerce, and enhance safety for students, the implementation has caused significant friction.

Since June 16, 2025, the square has become largely pedestrian with strict access rules, including a ban on vehicle circulation between 11:00 and 14:00. Automated access bollards have been installed for residents and authorized services. However, local merchants and residents have expressed skepticism, citing difficulties with parking and the continuous nature of the construction phases that began in July 2024.
