Pampa del Leoncito environmental damage investigation

A physician is facing legal investigation after driving a vehicle into the Pampa del Leoncito in San Juan, Argentina, causing significant environmental damage to the natural heritage site.

Agustín Añó, a 46-year-old nephrologist, appeared before the Justice of the Peace of Calingasta to present his defense. Añó claimed he was unaware of the restrictions regarding vehicle access to the area, arguing that signage was insufficient. He also cited darkness and accumulated water on the plain as factors that led to his Toyota Hilux becoming trapped.

Judge Andrés Troche noted that the access points feature signage specifying permitted activities and prohibitions. The judge also pointed out that Añó is familiar with the area, a factor that will be considered during the ongoing investigation into the magnitude of the environmental impact.
