PAN leader Jorge Romero tours Europe amid 2027 election preparations

The National Action Party (PAN) is intensifying its political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections, marked by both international outreach and internal organizational shifts. PAN leader Jorge Romero is currently touring Europe, including Germany and Brussels, to meet with center-right political figures and the European Parliament. Romero stated the goal is to share the reality of Mexico’s political situation and build international alliances. This trip has drawn criticism from Morena leaders, including Ariadna Montiel and President Claudia Sheinbaum, who argued that opposition leaders should focus on domestic territorial work rather than seeking foreign support.

Internally, the PAN is formalizing leadership roles. In Tlaxcala, Miriam Martínez Sánchez was named State Coordinator for the Defense of the Homeland, Family, and Liberty, a position seen as a precursor to a potential 2027 gubernatorial bid. However, the party has faced internal scrutiny regarding its selection processes; in one instance, the state leadership admitted a recent selection process for a coordination role was a “complete act of simulation” because a female candidate had already been pre-selected.

In Ciudad Juárez, the party’s candidate screening process resulted in 14 departures from 204 applicants, with one individual excluded due to alleged links to the Morena party. PAN officials stated these rigorous evaluations are intended to prevent infiltration by organized crime or opposing political interests.
