PAN members denounce exclusion of women from Puebla municipal roles
Members of the National Action Party (PAN) have issued a formal protest against statements made by Puebla Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier regarding the participation of women in local government. The controversy stems from the Governor's suggestion that women should not govern municipalities where organized crime is present.
PAN's Commission for the Prevention, Attention, and Eradication of Political Violence against Women, led by Deputy Joanna Felipe Torres, argued that excluding women from mayoral positions or municipal councils under the guise of protection is a form of paternalism that reproduces gender stereotypes. The party stated that such actions constitute a setback for substantive equality and political rights.
The organization emphasized that the state's responsibility is to provide security for all public officials rather than restricting the political rights of women due to safety risks. They rejected any attempt to relegate women to secondary or decorative roles, asserting that women possess the capacity and leadership necessary to govern even in hostile environments.
