Pan Zhanle and David Popovici face competition in 100m freestyle
The rivalry in the men's 100m freestyle swimming event intensifies between world record holder Pan Zhanle and Romanian swimmer David Popovici. Pan Zhanle, who set a world record of 46.40 seconds at the Paris Olympics, recently competed in the 2026 National Swimming Championships. However, he struggled in the heats, qualifying for the semifinals with a time of 47.32 seconds, marking a period where he has struggled to break the 47-second barrier.
David Popovici remains a dominant force in international swimming, having secured gold medals in both the 100m and 200m freestyle at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore and the 2026 European Championships in Paris. While Pan Zhanle holds the current world record, Popovici has maintained high-level performance in recent years. Another rising competitor in this generation is Egor Kornev, who has also challenged the top positions in recent competitions.
