Panagia Balinou project recreates Hagia Sophia acoustics

A technological and cultural initiative in Istanbul aims to recreate the unique acoustic environment of Hagia Sophia within the Panagia Balinou church in Chalkidona. The project seeks to allow visitors to experience Byzantine hymns as they would have sounded 1,500 years ago.

Led by Byron Nicolaides, founder and CEO of PeopleCert, the project involves collaboration with scientists from Stanford University and specialists in acoustics. Using advanced digital simulation and impulse response measurements, researchers have created a digital ‘acoustic footprint’ of Hagia Sophia, which accounts for its distinctive reverberation time of approximately 11 seconds.

The Hagia Sophia PeopleCert Choir, composed of expert chanters many of whom have roots in Constantinople, is performing the hymns in an authentic patriarchal style. To date, more than 80 Byzantine hymns have been completed, with a final goal of creating a digital archive of 150 hymns. The project combines music, science, and artificial intelligence to preserve and experience Byzantine musical heritage.
