Panagia Faneromeni Vathirryakos Monastery prepares for annual Thrace pilgrimage

The Panagia Faneromeni Vathirryakos Monastery, often referred to as the ‘Little Tinos of Thrace,’ is preparing for its annual feast day on August 23. Located near Aegiro in the Rhodope region, approximately 16 kilometers west of Komotini, the site serves as a major pilgrimage destination for the Thrace region and beyond.

The monastery’s history is tied to a miraculous icon discovered approximately 300 years ago during the Ottoman period. According to local tradition, an Ottoman landowner experienced visions of a cross atop a tree, leading to the discovery of the icon at the tree's roots. The site has been a place of veneration since the 12th century.

Following decisions made in 1955 by Metropolitan Timotheos, the icon was returned to its original location, and the monastery underwent various stages of construction and reorganization between 1957 and 1971. The annual celebration attracts large crowds of believers, many of whom participate in traditional walks to the monastery as a sign of devotion.
