Panagia Prousiotissa icon history and religious significance

The Panagia Prousiotissa, a miraculous icon housed in the historic Proso Monastery in Evrytania, holds significant religious and historical importance. Traditionally attributed to Saint Luke, the icon is said to have traveled from Prusa in Asia Minor to Greece during the Iconoclasm period. It is housed in a cave temple within the monastery and features a silver-gilt covering gifted by General Georgios Karaiskakis during the Greek War of Independence.

The icon also has a notable history related to the Greek Civil War. Between 1948 and 1950, due to the conflict, the icon was forced to leave its monastery for safety. It was hosted at the Church of Agios Georgios in the village of Potamoula, Aitoloakarnania, for two separate periods: 52 days in 1948 and ten months between 1949 and 1950.
