Panagia traditions and historical religious sites in Greece
The Virgin Mary, known as Panagia, holds a primary position of respect in Greece, with numerous titles and epithets assigned to her based on location, iconography, or her relationship with Christ. According to theologian Alexander Kariotoglou, these names often reflect the specific way a church is iconographically depicted or the geographic setting of the shrine.
In Paramythia, the historic Panagia of Paramythia (also known as Paramythia or the Great Panagia) serves as a significant late Byzantine monument. Originally a Catholic monastery with a rare three-aisle domed architecture, it later became a bishopric church. The site holds historical importance, having sheltered the sacred relics of Saint Spyridon and Saint Theodora of the Augusta during the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
