Panagiotis Andriopoulos releases new book on Ukrainian church developments
Theologian and author Panagiotis Andriopoulos has released a new book titled ‘Ukrainian Ecclesiastical – The Chronicle of War’ (Athens 2026). The 352-page work provides a critical analysis of the ecclesiastical developments occurring in Ukraine from the start of the Russian invasion in 2022 through 2026.
Andriopoulos examines the shifting roles of various religious institutions, specifically focusing on the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Church in Kyiv that maintains ties to the Moscow Patriarchate. The author critiques the ‘theory of the Russian world’ and the ‘theology of war,’ arguing that these concepts serve to justify military aggression as ‘holy.’
The book also addresses the granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine by the Ecumenical Patriarchate and the broader reorganizations within Eastern European religious relations, including the creation of a Patriarchal Exarchate in Lithuania. Additionally, the publication includes reflections on the author’s previous work, ‘Hellenic-Russian,’ regarding Russian ecclesiastical politics.
