Panagiotis Karatzas: Greek revolutionary leader assassinated in 1821

Panagiotis Karatzas, a prominent military leader during the Greek War of Independence, was assassinated by fellow Greeks on September 4, 1821. Born Panagiotis Anastasopoulos in Patras around 1776, he rose from humble beginnings as a laborer to become a key figure in the capture of Patras.

According to historical accounts, Karatzas was killed at the Ompli Monastery, southeast of Patras. The incident occurred when he was confronted by Kumaniotis and his men, who sought revenge for the death of Kumaniotis' brother. Reports suggest Karatzas reacted to the threats with defiance, which provoked the fatal shooting by an individual named Tsalamidas.

While recognized for his bravery and strategic skill in guerrilla tactics against Ottoman forces, Karatzas was often marginalized by the political leadership of the revolution. His legacy remains a tragic example of internal conflict among the Greek revolutionaries.
