Panama and Colombia launch joint operations in Darien Gap to combat Clan del Golfo

Panamanian and Colombian authorities are conducting joint operations in the Darien Gap to dismantle criminal activities controlled by the Clan del Golfo, Colombia’s largest criminal organization. These efforts target a complex illicit economy involving drug trafficking, illegal gold mining, migrant smuggling, and extortion.

In the border region near the Alto Limón Binational Post, Colombian military forces are working to eradicate approximately 500 hectares of coca plantations located on Colombian territory. Panamanian police provide security for these operations to protect against potential attacks from armed groups.

Additionally, authorities are targeting illegal mining camps, such as those found at the Mangle River. Commissioner Héctor De Sedas Cedeño of Panama’s National Border Service (Senafront) stated that the goal is to break the criminal system established by the Clan del Golfo. Recent operations in these remote areas have resulted in the capture of 30 individuals, including both Panamanian and Colombian nationals.
