Panama and Japan discuss cooperation and waste management
Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez received the credentials of the new Japanese Ambassador to Panama, Hironori Kiryu, to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and new cooperation opportunities.
Key topics of discussion included promoting Japanese investment in the Panamanian market and the potential establishment of a direct flight between Tokyo and Panama City to improve connectivity. The officials also addressed environmental concerns, specifically seeking sustainable technological solutions for the solid waste crisis at the Cerro Patacón landfill in Panama City. Japanese companies have expressed interest in participating in this waste management project.
Additionally, the meeting touched upon humanitarian support, with Martínez-Acha expressing gratitude to the Japanese government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for donations following an earthquake on October 9 that affected central regions of Panama.
