Panama and Philippines deepen trade and maritime cooperation

Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez‑Acha met with Philippine Foreign Minister Theresa Lázaro during the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Manila. The two officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding on academic cooperation and pledged to expand collaboration in commerce, maritime affairs, technology and education. Both sides highlighted Panama’s role as a logistics hub for Asia and the Philippines’ emerging economy, seeking to strengthen ties between ASEAN and Latin America. The countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1973, and the Philippines joined the Panama Canal Neutrality Treaty in 1981. The agreement aims to boost trade, maritime services and joint research initiatives between the two nations.
