Panama announces 35th National Beach and River Cleaning Day

Panama is organizing the 35th National Beach, Coast, and River Cleaning Day, scheduled for September 27, 2026, as part of Ocean Month activities. The initiative is led by the National Association for the Conservation of Nature (ANCON) in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, the municipalities of Panama, Colon, and San Miguelito, the Sea Protection Foundation (PROMAR), and the Audubon Society of Panama.

Cleaning points in Panama City will include Costa del Este, the Matías Hernández River mouth, PH Panama Bay Tower, and the coasts of Panama La Vieja. In Colon, efforts will focus on Playa Diablo. Environment Minister Juan Carlos Navarro emphasized the necessity of these actions to protect marine life, including whales, turtles, and coral reefs, against global pollution and plastic waste.

In related sanitation efforts, the Panama City Hall reported that approximately 470 tons of waste are removed weekly from rivers and coastal areas through the Río Verde Consortium. Recent operations in the Matías Hernández and Abajo rivers, as well as the Pacific coastline from Amador Causeway to Costa del Este, have removed hundreds of tons of debris, including plastics, tires, and appliances, to restore natural ecosystems and improve water flow.
