Panama authorities arrest six for illegal mining in Chagres National Park

Authorities in Panama have arrested six individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities within the buffer zone of Chagres National Park. The operation, conducted by the National Police with support from the Ministry of Environment, targeted gold extraction and washing activities at the María Piedra creek.

During the intervention, officials discovered evidence of unauthorized mining, including removed stones and structures equipped with mesh used for washing auriferous material. The suspects were transferred to the Specialized Superior Prosecutor's Office for Environmental Crimes to face judicial proceedings. This action is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle illegal mining networks and protect sensitive watersheds and protected areas in Panama.
