Panama authorities investigate drug-laced candy and illicit tobacco trade
Panamanian authorities are investigating a criminal network involved in the distribution of drug-laced candies. During the 'Panamá Norte Seguro 2' operation, law enforcement conducted raids in Chilibre, Caimitillo, Alcalde Díaz, and Las Cumbres. The operation resulted in the arrest of 19 individuals, including selective transport drivers, suspected of preparing and distributing adulterated products via home delivery. Authorities seized illicit substances, cash, ammunition, and mobile phones.
Separately, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) has estimated that approximately 50% of tobacco products marketed in Panama are illicit. Officials warned that this illegal trade poses significant public health risks and facilitates access to tobacco for minors. While the scale of illegal vaping products is not yet precisely measured, Minsa is collaborating with the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies to conduct market research and strengthen control measures through inter-agency cooperation.
