Panama authorities seize 109 sacks of shark fins in Colón
Panamanian authorities have seized a container containing 109 sacks of shark fins at the Port of Manzanillo in Colón. The shipment was destined for Malaysia but was irregularly declared as “fish swim bladder” to bypass inspections.
The seizure was the result of a joint operation involving the Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente), the Aquatic Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP), the Police Investigation Directorate (DIP), and the Specialized Multidisciplinary Environmental Team (EME-Ambiental).
Marine biology specialists are currently conducting taxonomic identification to determine if the seized fins belong to species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Panama maintains a “zero quota” policy for any shark species listed under CITES, meaning the extraction and trade of such products are strictly prohibited.
The case has been referred to the Specialized Superior Prosecutor’s Office for Environmental Crimes to initiate criminal investigations and establish legal responsibilities.
