Panama Canal reduces vessel transits due to El Niño drought
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced a progressive reduction in daily vessel transits to combat water shortages caused by the El Niño phenomenon. Starting September 3, 2026, daily transits will be reduced to 34 vessels, with a further decrease to 32 transits scheduled for September 15, 2026. This measure aims to preserve freshwater levels in the Gatun and Alhajuela lakes, which have seen precipitation levels 34% below the historical average for the rainy season.
In response to these hydrological challenges, the ACP has also adjusted vessel draft limits. The Neopanamax limit was set at 48 feet on September 2, with a subsequent reduction to 47.5 feet planned for October 1. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that El Niño may intensify to a 'very strong' level and persist through early 2027.
Financially, the Panama Canal has presented its 2027 fiscal year budget, projecting total revenues of $5,555 million. This includes a record direct contribution to the Panamanian State of approximately $3,608 million. The budget anticipates 10,750 deep-draft vessel transits and prioritizes infrastructure maintenance, watershed conservation, and cybersecurity to ensure long-term operational sustainability.
Separately, the University of Panama has submitted a budget proposal of B/. 379.4 million for 2027 to support its academic and administrative functions.
