Panama Canal appoints Ilya Espino de Marotta as Administrator

The Panama Canal has announced new leadership for the 2026-2033 term. Ilya Espino de Marotta has assumed the role of Administrator, making her the first woman to hold the top executive position at the interoceanic waterway. An engineer by training with over 40 years of experience within the institution, Espino de Marotta previously served as Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer. Her administration will focus on the ‘Strategic Vision 2025-2035,’ which prioritizes water security, operational resilience, service diversification, and strengthening Panama’s position as a global logistics and energy hub.

To support the new administration, the Panama Canal Board of Directors has appointed Miguel Antonio Lorenzo Fábrega as Deputy Administrator. Lorenzo, who has 28 years of experience with the Canal, currently serves as Vice President of Infrastructure and Engineering. He has held various technical and leadership roles, including involvement in the design and execution of the Canal Expansion Program. The Board stated that the selection process was rigorous and technical, aimed at ensuring the continuity and long-term stability of the waterway’s operations.
