Panama pitches $8.5 billion infrastructure and Canal plan in New York

Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino met with global business leaders and investors in New York to promote a massive infrastructure and logistics agenda. A central component of this strategy is an $8.5 billion investment plan for the Panama Canal, which includes the development of two new port terminals, a gas pipeline, a logistics corridor, and the Río Indio reservoir to secure water supply.

During meetings with Citi CEO Jane Fraser and other institutional investors, Mulino highlighted Panama's 5.5% economic growth in the first half of the year. Citi expressed interest in strengthening its financial relationship with the country, offering access to international markets and financing, while advising Panama to maintain its investment-grade credit rating.

Beyond the Canal, the government is pitching projects such as the Panama-David train, the third Metro line, and electrical interconnections with Colombia and Ecuador. The administration is also focusing on attracting investment in advanced technologies, including semiconductors and artificial intelligence, through participation in the Pax Silica international alliance.
