Panama Canal marks 112 years with new strategic vision

The Panama Canal has marked 112 years of operations, highlighting a strategic shift toward its 2025–2035 Vision. This plan aims to transform the waterway from a traditional maritime transit route into a comprehensive logistics, energy, and services platform.

Key initiatives include the development of the Corozal container transshipment terminal on the Pacific side and the Telfers terminal on the Atlantic side to boost international connectivity. Additionally, the proposed Energy Corridor involves a 76-kilometer pipeline to transport propane, butane, and ethane between both oceans.

Operational data shows a recovery in demand. Between October 2025 and July 2026, the canal recorded 10,623 deep-draft vessel transits, a 6.12% increase compared to the same period in fiscal year 2025. This growth follows previous disruptions caused by drought-related restrictions. To commemorate the anniversary, the Canal Museum in Panama City held open house events to showcase the waterway's history and impact on the nation.
