The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has begun implementing vessel transit restrictions due to a severe drought linked to the El Niño climate phenomenon. Starting September 4, 2026, daily transits will be reduced from 36 to 34 vessels. This number is scheduled to decrease further to 32 vessels per day beginning September 15, 2026.

The drought has significantly impacted the Gatun and Alhajuela artificial lakes, which provide the freshwater necessary for canal operations and supply drinking water to over half of Panama's population. Rainfall in the canal watershed between May and August was approximately 34 to 35.8 percent below the historical average. To conserve water, the ACP has also implemented draft restrictions, reducing the maximum permitted depth for vessels from 15.24 meters to 14.63 meters.

In a separate leadership transition, Ilya Espino de Marotta is set to take office as the first female administrator of the Panama Canal on September 7, 2026, for a seven-year term. Rubén Gustavo Pérez Pinzón has been designated as the temporary sub-administrator to ensure operational continuity during this period.
